Connect an AI Assistant

You can connect an AI assistant, Claude, ChatGPT, or any MCP host, to this store's Luna Order Editing data. Once connected, you ask the assistant questions in plain language instead of clicking through the app, and it can propose settings changes that you approve in your Shopify admin.

The connection belongs to one store. There is no API key and no client secret anywhere in this flow.

Before you start

  • You need to be signed in to the Shopify admin for the store you are connecting.
  • Your assistant must support remote MCP servers over streamable HTTP. Claude on web, desktop and mobile does; so do most current MCP hosts.
  • Nothing is shared until you tick permissions and approve them yourself.

Step 1. Copy the server URL

In the app, open AI connections in the left menu. It sits under Settings, as its own item.

The first card is Connect an AI assistant. It holds one field, MCP server URL for this store, with a copy button beside it. That URL is the only thing you need to take from the app.

You only need this URL. There's no API key or secret to enter.

Step 2. Send the message to your assistant

The same card has a Message for your assistant block. Use Show message to read it and Copy message to take it. Paste it into a conversation with your assistant as is.

The message is always in English, because it is written for the model, not for you. It tells the assistant the server URL, the connection name to use, that the transport is streamable HTTP rather than stdio, and that authentication is OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration and PKCE. It also tells the assistant not to change its own configuration on its own, but to walk you through where to paste the URL and wait for you to agree.

If you would rather do it by hand, add a custom connector in your host's own settings, paste the URL, choose streamable HTTP, and leave every key or secret field empty. In Claude on web and desktop that is Settings → Connectors.

Step 3. Approve access in your Shopify admin

Your assistant sends you to a page in your own Shopify admin titled Connect an AI assistant. Three things happen there.

  1. Check the store. The first line reads An AI assistant wants access to your Luna Order Editing data on {your store}. Under it, It will send you to shows the host the assistant runs on, and its full redirect address. If either looks wrong, close the page.
  2. Name the connection. Connection name is how you will tell this assistant apart from the others later.
  3. Tick the permissions you want, then select Approve.

Nothing is ticked for you. The page says so:

Tick what you want to allow — nothing is granted by default. The assistant still connects, it just can't do what you leave unticked.

Until you tick at least one, the Approve button stays disabled and the page shows Tick at least one permission to approve this connection. Leaving the page with Cancel grants nothing.

The full list is on Permissions.

Approval links are short lived. A request page you leave open for more than 10 minutes expires and the assistant has to start over.

Step 4. Check that it really connected

Two checks, both worth doing.

  • Ask the assistant which tools it can see. It should be able to name them. What it sees depends on what you ticked, so a read-only connection genuinely has no change tools in its list.
  • Reopen AI connections. The connection must appear under Connected AI assistants with the name you gave it and Connected {date}. If you still see No AI assistant is connected, it did not finish.

If the tab reports Couldn't confirm the connection or One more step, see Troubleshooting.

What the assistant can do next

  • Answer questions about orders, edit history, analytics and your current settings, within the permissions you ticked.
  • Propose changes to your editing rules, refund settings, notification settings and email templates, if you granted those. Every change still goes through a confirmation page you open in your admin. See Approving changes.
