Troubleshooting AI Connections
The assistant asks for an API key or a client secret
There isn't one. Tell it that authentication is OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration and PKCE, and that it will be sent to a browser to approve access in your Shopify admin. If your host insists on the fields, leave them empty.
The assistant says the server URL does not work
Each store has its own URL, ending in your store handle. Using the bare server address without it returns a message saying exactly that: use the URL shown on the AI connections page. Copy it again from the app rather than typing it.
"Couldn't confirm the connection"
You approved, but the assistant has not picked the approval up. Select Finish connecting on that same page.
"One more step"
The assistant runs on your own computer, so your browser has to hand it the connection. Select Finish connecting.
The approval link is expired or not found
Approval requests last 10 minutes. Go back to your assistant and connect again; the old link cannot be reused.
Approve is greyed out
Nothing is ticked yet. The page shows Tick at least one permission to approve this connection.
The approval page does not name the assistant
It never does, by design. A client can call itself anything when it connects, so the page shows the address it will send you back to instead. Judge the request by the fact that you just started it, and by that address.
The connection is not in the list
Reopen AI connections. If it still reads No AI assistant is connected, the flow did not finish, usually because the tab was closed before Finish connecting.
The assistant says it changed something, but nothing changed
Approving only grants permission. Ask it to apply the change, then check Change history: a real change always leaves a row.
A change was refused when the assistant applied it
Either the confirmation expired, they last 15 minutes, or you had not approved it yet. The second case is not an error and the assistant will say so; approve it and let it try again, rather than asking for a fresh draft, which only creates a second thing to approve.
The assistant says it does not have permission
It will name the permission it needs. Open AI connections, select Edit, tick it, and save. It applies on the next request.
The assistant cannot see a tool you expected
Tools are filtered by the permissions you granted. A missing tool means an unticked permission. Change tools also need the matching read permission, so Propose changes to your program rules does nothing without View your program configuration.
You asked it to pay an affiliate and it refused
It always will. No permission lets an assistant release a payout or mark one as paid. Payouts happen only in the app.
The assistant reports a timeout on a change
It may or may not have landed. Do not approve the same change again straight away. Check Change history or the setting itself first; a repeat approval is refused if the first one went through.
Something you do not recognise is connected
Select Revoke. It takes effect on that assistant's very next request.
